Why use an AI handwriting transcriber?

  • Cursive & print both work

Handles flowing cursive, neat print, and mixed styles without needing to configure anything.

  • Historical documents

Read old manuscripts, letters, and archival records that would take hours to manually transcribe.

  • Honest about illegibility

Unclear words are marked [illegible] rather than guessed — so you know exactly what to check.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an account to use this tool?
Yes — a signed-in account is required because the transcription runs on our servers and uses credits.
What types of handwriting does it work with?
The AI handles cursive, print, and mixed handwriting styles. It works best when the image is clear and well-lit, but can read difficult or older handwriting styles too.
What image formats are accepted?
JPG, PNG, WebP, GIF, and TIFF images up to 10 MB.
What if some words are illegible?
Rather than guessing, the AI marks genuinely unclear words as [illegible] so you know exactly where to review manually.
What is the difference between the output formats?
Plain Text outputs clean paragraphs with no formatting. Markdown adds headings, lists, and emphasis where they are clearly visible in the original. Keep Layout preserves the original line breaks and indentation as closely as possible.
Does the "Fix obvious errors" option change the meaning?
No — it only corrects clear spelling mistakes that are obviously caused by difficult handwriting (e.g. a letter that could be an "n" or "m"). It does not paraphrase or alter the intended meaning. Leave it off for a fully verbatim transcription.
Can it transcribe languages other than English?
Yes. The AI can read handwriting in many languages. Add a language hint (e.g. "French", "German") to help it interpret ambiguous characters correctly.
Can I transcribe old or historical handwriting?
Yes. The AI is effective on historical documents, letters, and manuscripts. Adding a language hint and leaving "Fix obvious errors" off is recommended for archival accuracy.
